ALUMNI NEWS AND EVENTS
Just over a year and a half ago, Brother Jody Goad was diagnosed with a very aggressive form of brain cancer. Sadly, he lost his battle July 9th 2003
Jody grew up in Hillsville, a small town not too far from Virginia Tech. There he excelled in school, was a member of the Carroll Co. Historical Society and founded the Carroll Co. Genealogy club: an offspring of one of his hobbies.
Since he was a child, Jody loved Virginia Tech. He entered as a freshman there and was later initiated in the Pi class of AXE in fall of 1995. He became Reporter in 1996 and Master Alchemist in 1997. During his term as MA, membership increased by 150% and he led the chapter to highest national rating and best professional activity chapter in nation. After his graduation in May 1998, with a degree in Chemistry, Jody continued his service to the chapter for several years as Alumni Secretary, even as he was earning his MBA, which he received in 2000.
Those of us who knew Jody will always remember his commitment to the fraternity. Jody went out of his way to connect with new pledges as well as keep the brotherhood together. He introduced new traditions, such as the activities at the baseball diamond during PT2. To this day, it is one of the most popular stations. But his influence on the Gamma Iota chapter will be missed the most. Many officers as well as brothers went to him first for sound advice on difficult matters.
Outside of AXE, Jody will be remembered for his dedication toward Hokie Football. You only needed to attend one of his tailgates to realize his passion. He began organizing them weeks ahead of time and they ran like clockwork the day of the game. He was one of the most enthusiastic Hokie fans to ever throw a tailgate and attend a game. As I look ahead to the season coming up, I don't know how we will do it without him.
